shout out from Lenscratch

Thanks Aline Smithson, creator of Lenscratch for featuring untitled #10 in a recent post.
An alternate take on that image. I still can't decide which version will make the final exhibition cut.

wolf at the door

Wolves are complicated. They are terrifying. Maligned. Harbingers from some ancient place. I'm good with wolves - one came to me in a dream when I was in a dark place. That's not the case for everyone though.

out-takes: man & beast

Lately I've been looking back through old work to help get me kick started to begin something new. I came across these earlier attempts at a Big Love style series I made around the time the equal marriage law debate was happening across Canada. The images never really came off but they do still make me smile. The last one was inspired by comments some deep thinker sent to our local Member of Parliament equating gay marriage with bestiality. "What's next?" she wrote, " union between man and daughter or even man and beast?". Boggles the mind really.

studio update

There hasn't been a lot of activity in my studio these past few months, I'm afraid to admit. This isn't to say I haven't been working on anything new. In addition preparing for the anticipated yet apprehensive arrival of my own pram in the hall, I've been pondering and planning a new series incorporating scale model interior sets. Unlike Plastic, which celebrated the garish the obvious and the fake, this series will have a decidedly more understated tone with with hints of menace, fear and the surreal.

After months of gathering the right pieces, I've started assembling the sets. Here's a polaroid test shot of one in progress.

Seems I'm finally coming out of my incubated period as Martha Wainwright would say and getting back to work screen testing potentials for a new series. At the risk of giving too much away, expect this guy to make an appearance. Inspired by a recent visit to the Stasi headquarters in the former east berlin.

I was searching through my files for some old family photos I'd scanned a while back and came across this image from a few years ago. While I don't even recall scanning it in the first place, looking at it today, something about it kind of appeals to me. Guess it's worth digging through the reject pile now and then.

chicken in a can comes down

Since all good things must eventually come to an end, Taking Stock came down from the Yukon Art Centre Community Gallery yesterday. I had a lot of fun putting this one together. The overall effect of the canvas printing and the ornate frames added just the Tom Robbins-meets-Charles Wehringer feel I was after.

Thanks to everyone who came up to see the show, wrote about it (here and here) and who took the time to email me with your kind words. Thanks also to Jessica and Mary at the YAC for their help getting the word out and to the jury of the Advanced Artist Award fund for supporting the project.

Here are a few images of the gang all together.

Taking Stock

Taking Stock is conceived as an unconventional portrait series that pays homage to one of my favourite Whitehorse institutions. More than a just a corner store, Riverside Grocery is a lone holdout of independence and diversity in an encroaching tide of big box stores and mega-brands that are swiftly and irrevocably changing the social and urban fabric of my home town and small towns like it everywhere.

Carrying such old-school staples as Blue Star chicken in a can, Mapleine imitation extract and Gold Rush cigarillos, this mom and pop shop on the banks of the Yukon River stands stalwart against that wolf in sweatshop clothing known as “progress”. Truly one of the last of the last frontiers, Riverside stares defiantly in the homogenous face of globalization and refuses to go quietly. I like to think of it as the place where the Colourful Five Percent do their grocery shopping.

P.S. If you look closely, you may also see the secret mini-series buried within and inspired by “Skinny Legs and All”, in which author Tom Robbins proposes that the inertia of objects is deceptive and that inanimate objects remain static to us humans solely on account of our neuro-muscular chauvinism. As we hurtle at breakneck speed through the self-imposed chaos of blackberries and blue tooth, play dates, strategic planning and treadmills, the codification and commodification of the mystic, are we missing the trees for the commercially engineered forest? In our never ending pursuit of progress, at the end of the day, is the cosmic joke really on us?
